Things we take for granted in America, Part I of many…
In my past travels in Europe there was one realization that hit hard, right where it hurts; in the belly. I love my breakfast and they (Europeans) don’t eat breakfast like in America. Bacon and eggs? Hardly? Maybe eggs with other dishes, but breakfast here can be a simple piece of toast with jam, a sandwich, or maybe an empanada or quiche, both of which DO pass my breakfast satisfaction test. In America we hear that bacon commercial, with the sizzling and what happens? You lust after bacon (Sorry my vegetarian friends if this is tough to read…)
Anyway, dilemma solved!
In Spain, Jamon (pork) is everywhere. Walk the streets, go to the food courts and there are sides of pork ready to be shaved very finely. At the market I found this package of Jamon which is very, very thin sliced pork, and with about 20 seconds per side in the frying pan, it tastes delicious! It leaves no messy bacon grease, just a little salty, but also has a nice crunch to it.
At our AirBNB (the only way to travel) we have a full kitchen and fridge, and we eat well, usually once per day at a restaurant, and the rest of the time here. Fresh squeezed Valencia oranges, eggs, and my newly found Jamon, and I am a happy breakfast eater once more!
Simple pleasures, but this is part of the process. As we live our lives (in America) with the same things at our fingertips, we take everything for granted. We get very comfortable. So far on my adventure, I have faced some stressful moments and some of discomfort, but they passed. The journey goes on and it will for as long as it’s fun.
