Our next destination, La Spezia, was a 90 minute train ride, so we worked around that and felt that we got our moneys’ worth in Pisa. Knowing that we would return the day of departure kept our options open since I DID consider walking the Pisa Wall.

The train ride was beautiful, with some grand mountains and peaks on the inland side. The $10 ticket was a good value, and after finding our room (100 steps UP to the top floor), we decided that we had enough juice for one more climb after we had dinner. La Spezia is one of the more common and likely “launching points” to get to Cinque, since it’s just a train ride away from many Italian cities. Our room was nicely located, though VERY small, and only a 5 minute walk to the train station, as well as downtown. The town had some charm, though almost all the eateries and shops were along one main drag, which terminated at the harbor, which IS huge, and is one of the largest commercial ports in the Mediterranean.

The first thing to determine before starting your Cinque Tere visit is: how long do you need/ want?

They offer one to three day passes, and the prices vary based on season and age. We initially thought we needed three days, but decided on two, and if we needed more we could add it on. We didn’t. For OUR purposes two days was fine, but if you plan to HIKE a lot more than we did, you might require more time. Here is the order of villages heading north from La Spezia:

>Riomaggiore: just 10 minutes away, it was the one that MANY stopped at, which was great since the train was PACKED when we got on!

>Manarolla

>Corniglia: one that may be overlooked by many since it does NOT go to the ocean

>Vernazzo

>Monterosso: this was where we STARTED, and it’s the largest of the five villages.

I’ll not go into the breakdown of all these since I just wrote an article for International Living on our time there. I’ll post a link when it goes live.

Cinque Terre (The Five Lands): It’s iconic, beautiful, and surprisingly easy to visit! Since we had FIVE days stay, and we needed TWO for Cinque, what do we do with the other days? Well, Kat came up with the winning idea: let’s take the train and visit Florence, and, just like that, we did. She has been there multiple times, and I was there once, about 1996, on my very FIRST international trip with my daughter’s class trip from high school. My ex and I were parent chaperones, and I barely remember the visit, but it was amazing easy and convenient, though it DID involve another train ride to Pisa (about 1:30), and part II to Florence, about 1:20, so, in just over three hours we were there. Was it worth it!

We mainly wanted to see the iconic sites, and since everything was close, our four hours or so there, was enough, and that included an amazing lunch at their Mercato Centrale, which was the best food court I have ever seen. Florence (or Firenze in Italian) is the capital of the Tuscany region and birthplace of the Italian Renaissance. Getting off the train there was SO much different that Pisa, since it was a mob of people. Kat knew her way around enough to take us in the right direction, and even though you could spend many days—or weeks- there, we knew our time was limited to about four or five hours. Fortunately, quite a few attractions are within a few blocks of each other, and we got to the famous Piazzo de domo, and saw the iconic Duomo, as well as the Galleria dell’Accademia (The Academy), which houses the REAL Michelangelo’s David sculpture. We didn’t tour the museum due to our time constraint, but a life-sized version of David IS outside the structure, along with what they call the Loggia dei lanzi, which is an open (outside) museum, with some amazing sculptures.

We stuck to our timetable since we had another three hour ride to get back to La Spezia, but it all worked out. The five day getaway did exactly what we wanted it to do: it allowed us to explore something different, new, yet not spend a lot of time or money in travel. Albania is ideally suited for things like this. Italy is across the water, Greece next store, and scores of countries a few hours’ flight to the north.

After eliminating NORTH (Austria, Belgium, too cold already), we settled on Pisa, since Kat has never seen THE Tower, and Pisa is just a 90 minute train ride from a place we have wanted to visit for years: Cinque Terre. First: Pisa.

It’s an easy 90 minute flight from Albania (even though we had to get up at 0300 to catch that early flight), the temps were about the same, even a few degrees WARMER, and the airfare was $55 USD round trip, per person. Regional flights almost anywhere outside the US are very reasonable, which makes mini vacations like this more practical. From the Pisa airport the Downtown (Centro) area was only about 15 minutes via a very novel carrier. It’s called the PisaMover, and it’s an automated shuttle like we find at distant airport terminals, but this one takes you directly to the regional train station and downtown. No need to hassle with a bus or taxi, and for 5€ we kept our bags there while we explored.

The Arno River divides the town and there are several bridges, all looking quite old and very Romanesque! Walking through the streets we had only one target, and when the top suddenly appeared, Kat exclaimed, “Oh my God, there it is!!” It’s pretty hard to miss since there’s not many buildings with a four degree (4°) lean, which doesn’t SOUND like much, but we are so used to living in a world of straight buildings, and any building—including a 185 foot (57 meter) building, stands out. And it truly does. The Tower initially was supposed to be almost 200 foot tall, but when the leaning became obvious, they modified the height. About 35 years ago the lean was even WORSE, about 5.5 degrees, but eight years of restoration and shoring (hopefully) stabilized it, leveling it about 15 inches, which is quite a bit. In time the famous Tower may tip over since the work that was done does not really “fix” the unstable soil.

We decided not to do the climb, but spent time exploring the other marvelous architecture in the Piazza dei Miracoli, including the Cathedral (Duomo di Pisa), the Baptistery (Battistero di San Giovanni), and the Monumental Cemetery (Camposanto Monumentale), and all are still pretty mind-blowing. There is no area in Italy with so many amazing structures cloistered together this close, and it’s beautiful in every way. We did NOT expect the crowds we found in mid-October, but between the attractions and the hordes of people, it was jamming. One of the options available was to walk the Wall surrounding the area, but with such a long day we pushed that back until we returned a few days later, prior to departure. At 11 meters (36’) high, the wall goes a LONG way, about four miles, but after three days of non-stop walking, I regrettably only did half. Even so, the almost 1000 year old wall is in amazing condition for a structure that was started in 1154, which is EXACTLY 800 years before I was born. Stuff like that, truly ancient things, really used to blow my mind, but after living in apartments that were 500 years old, and visiting ruins and monuments that were many thousands of years old, it all becomes part of life on the road.

It’s a famous line from As You Like It, one of Shakespeare’s more well-known plays, and is a metaphor to how we—everyone— plays their roles on different stages at different times during our lives. The world in this context, is not metaphorical, however, but truly means the planet, the globe, that we all live on, starting from our infancy through childhood, to our teens, young adulthood, the middle years, and eventually, to the last stage, when we hopefully acquire the wisdom we’d been seeking from the beginning.

That got me thinking about our, Kathleen’s and my, nomadic journey, which started on February 17, 2019, and continues six and a half years later. Upon reflection, I noted stages that our journey went through, and still is, and wondered: Where is the end? When is the “final act,” when the “fat lady” sings, to coin a phrase? We can never know the “when” the curtain falls, but we do have some control over the where!

Here’s how our “acts” unfolded since 2019:

Act I: “Let the Show begin!”

In the summer of 2018, Kat and I spent six weeks traveling throughout Spain and Portugal via bus, train, and motorcycle. We had been together less than a year, and although “seeing the world and living in different countries,” was HER dream, it was not mine.

But I recognized that it could be, and was very possible.

Six months later, with everything sold that we did not want, we were off to Valencia, Spain, for six weeks, followed by Tivoli, Italy for six more. Our 90 days in the Schengen Zone was well spent, so off we went to a country we really didn’t know much about: Croatia, which we loved, and have lived in several more times. We utilized most of our allotted 90 days there, then, in quick succession, were off in a whirlwind, prompted by a Eurail Pass that had to be used, or lost! Hungary, Austria, and Poland, is where we started, and we stayed in Europe through Slovakia, Romania, Serbia, Italy, Tunisia, and finally finished Year One in Greece.

From there it was a BIG step: Asia, landing in Singapore on New Years Day, 2020, then on to Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia—and that was all in three months! Just as we started this leg, the pandemic hit, jeopardizing our travels as well as our health, but circumstances took us back to the US for Kat’s son’s wedding, and from there, it was on to what was supposed to be a “two-week stay” in Puerto Morelos, Mexico. But, just like Gilligan and his mates on their island, our “three hour tour” turned into 15 months. By the way, I have all these stops on a spreadsheet which is still current today.

Act II: The Heroes Journey is in Jeopardy!

After traveling non-stop for 13 months, chilling out in Mexico was not a catastrophe, COVID aside. We rented a nice 2br/2ba apartment just 15 minute’s bike ride from the beautiful Caribbean, and made some great friends. We were all in the same literal boat together, unable to travel beyond certain borders, but when it was done, we counted our blessings that we got stuck where we did. We even dealt with COVID boredom without killing each other! For the first few months even the ocean was off limits, but that restriction was removed, and gradually the world returned to normal—but this was a NEW Normal.

Finally, in June 2021, we were able to move on, and were itching to do exactly that. Kat went to Ohio to visit her family and new (first) grandson, and I adventured to other parts of Mexico and into Ecuador, my first steps in South America. I loved it there, made a great friend, and Kat and I reconnected in Peru, which we toured via bus, finishing up in Machu Picchu. And now—FINALLY—it was time to return to Europe.

Act III: On the Road Again

Since we loved Croatia the first time we were there, we decided to pick up our European leg in that same place, and we stayed for 90 more days. But, winter was coming, and we asked ourselves, “Where can we go that is ‘warm?’” by our wimpy standards. The answer was Turkey (now Turkiye) since it was SOUTH, large, affordable, plus I got enamored with the town of Antalya, so that’s where we went. The world was just starting to ease travel restrictions, but when we found out how easy it was to get “residency” there, we went for it—and got approved for a two-year stay. Sweet! Prices were really cheap back then (before the Ukraine Crisis), and we truly loved Turkey and thought we would return.

But, as is normally the case, we got itchy feet after a while, and another summer was coming (with crowds, heat, and higher rent), so we looked for a new direction. That direction was north, since we were invited to tour the northern Greece area and document our travels. Fifteen cities in 30 days was amazing and that partnership with the tourism bureau was glorious. We also loved Greece.

However, we did a little “intermission” before that trip started, and returned to the US for a month. We hadn’t been back for a while, I had some business events to attend to, plus Kat wanted to see her family, and on top of that, I won a trip to the island of Domenica in the Caribbean, all expenses paid. How could we miss that?!

On July 4th of that year (2022) we left Antalya on two wheels, and started what became an 88 day bike trip. We traveled all the way up the western Turkish coastline—spectacular by the way!!–, continued into Greece for the balance of our 88 days, and finished up in Bulgaria and Romania, where we returned “Max,” our trusty BMW310, to his home. During that entire almost three months we had incredible weather with just 15 minutes of rain. Then, on to Athens, stayed there for six weeks, and, once again, we had to leave the Schengen. Now what??

Where did we go next??

Great question, but it’s intermission, so grab some popcorn, maybe a bathroom break, and the play (show) will go on in our next installment.

At the end of Act III (our last letter), I was reviewing the first three “acts” of our nomadic travel play. Starting in 2019, when Kat and I were both pretty green and new to this life, then onward to COVID lockdown, which is called “the Supreme Ordeal” in fiction writing parlance. You know, when you wonder, “HOW will the hero get out of this mess?” since we know there is usually a Happy Ever After. Well, of course, Kat and I DID get out of the COVID mess, as did all of you, and Act III continued our journey back to where it began: Europe.

A few months in Europe, and then Turkey, and when we finished up our stay there, our plan was to return and use it as a long term base. Laws and residency rules changed, so that idea was cast aside, and Act IV took us to a new country for us: Albania.

Act IV: A New Chapter Unfolds

If ever there was a country that was “misunderstood,” it’s this one. Too many movies and shows include Albanian gangsters, spies, and assorted bad asses, but the country is far from dangerous, and the people are lovely. AND they appreciate Americans, as well as most tourists.

We arrived in November 2022, and since we could stay a year, we had no end game in mind. We lived in three different units over 7 months, including a 2br/2ba unit that was less than a year old, and with a pano view of the island of Corfu. For that we paid $500 USD, which, unfortunately, has gone up since the country has become very well-known over the past few years. Between one of our stays we took a radical time out and went to the Middle East, and visited Israel, Jordan, and Egypt.

I could write a book on THAT six week period, but suffice to say, it was breathtaking. Walking the streets of Jerusalem and the Old City, with the four different areas inside for Jews, Muslims, Christians, and Armenians, really brought home the separation between these four that have gone on for thousands of years. Walking inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which houses the Calvary where Christ was crucified, is as thought provoking as anything we have ever done.

Our five weeks in Israel (including Tel Aviv) allowed us to take a tour to Jordan, which included an overnight stay at a Bedouin camp, and walk through Petra, another ancient marvel. Then, back to Jerusalem, and finally on to Cairo and Giza, where we spent about 12 days in total, visiting the Great Pyramids, Luxor, and Abu Simbel. After those countries it was back to Albania for another three months, then another 87 days on a motorcycle (Aragon we named him) through eastern Europe, including many of the Balkan countries, and finishing up in Paris as the summer of 2023 came to a close. Just in time, too, since we pushed our Schengen time to the very last day (not recommended).

Act V: And Now for Something Completely Different: Hawaii, OZ, NZ, Asia

Paris was our last European port of call since the French Bee airlines had great flights back to the US, which is where we were heading: Hawaii to be exact, to stay at my timeshare I had not visited for six years, and Kat had never been to. But our visit to the mainland of the US was short lived, about 2.5 weeks, as we were about to do “Something Completely Different,” to borrow a movie title from Monty Python. Our time on the mainland was followed by a week at my Maui timeshare, and 10 days on the Big Island. As expensive as the US and Hawaii is, it was surprisingly manageable. Finally, the first week of October, we flew to Honolulu to catch our 18 day, one-way repositioning cruise to Sydney, Australia.

This was significant in many ways. It was our first “real cruise,” beyond a 3 day jaunt we each took years ago, plus we passed the International Date Line, and had ports of call in French Polynesia, which is something impractical and expensive if we were flying there. Tahiti was stop number one, which was a disappointment, and way too touristy and unauthentic. But Moorea was a gem, and one of the few tours we actually took, and Raiatea, where we rented a scooter and circumnavigated the island perimeter, was heavenly.

Finally, after 18 days at sea, we woke up at dawn to look out our porthole and see the iconic Sydney Opera House lit all aglow—amazing! We only spent nine days in Oz—mostly on a Ducati Monster motorcycle (not ideal for touring!)— and that was spent between Sydney and Canberra and a few coastal towns on the way. We continuously were impressed with the hospitality of the Aussies, and many invited us to their home—which we plan to do next year.

Act VI: Is the Curtain Coming Down?

Last April we returned to Europe for an intended five month bike ride through Greece, Italy, and the Balkans. That trip was shortened to 43 days by the theft of Hermes, and as I write this, we are in Tirana, Albania, three months into a seven month stay. In January we head back to Asia, but that’s another story.

So, Albania.

It’s affordable, and we can stay for a year with no paperwork or visa. The people, the food, and the country, are amazing, and there’s little we don’t like about it. We can get residency for five years with little effort, and we have bounced that idea around many times. By the time we return here (probably two years), we will have been on the road for almost nine years. That’s a long time without a “home.” Can we, should we, DO we make Albania our last stop, where we say NO MAS?

The Fat Lady may sing, and our final curtain may draw to a close. Time will tell, but so far, that’s the way it’s looking.

He retired from aviation after 40+ years with one goal: to have a boat on the Adriatic and spend his summers boating here. Last year he bought an Angel Marine 45, and I just returned from five days of living on it. Considering how much time I spent on a 45’ boat, there’s quite a bit of room, but every step must be calculated, and his advice was “three points of contact” at all times.

Just like so many other resort towns. One top of that, last week, the day after I got there, was the Assumption Day holiday, one of the biggest Italian (and Greek) holidays of the year, and it was like the 4th of July in the US—complete with fireworks.

A place for everything and everything in its place, I guess. Unfortunately, we didn’t take the boat out to the open sea, so I STILL didn’t get a feel of what THAT was like. Even so, the gentle, constant roll of the waves is something that takes getting used to. I was also curious about what people DO all day, but just sitting in the open air and having a meal, is a joy. “Beautifully detached,” is how she described it, which meant, just relaxing and enjoy the joy of doing nothing.

Or do we cancel the trip. Moving forward meant that we’d have a 12 hour ferry ride going out, staying a week, and then a 14-hour ferry ride going back to Naples, Italy. It also meant that if decided to not do that , we would had to fly from Palermo to Albania, which turned out to be an expensive alternative which we choose not to take. So overall, we liked Sardinia.

Yes, it is worth it .

The town has amazing history as do so many places in Italy, and between the Church of Santa Maria, several cathedrals, the Cagliari architecture museum, and the Royal Palace, there is enough to keep any history buff entertained! And for those who want athletic workouts, you get those too, since the town quickly goes uphill from the flat harbor area, and it’s a series of up and downs the entire time you’re here! There is definitely a charm, and no lack of places to eat or drink! We took the train to the northern town of Oristrano, just for the experience, but that turned out to be a bust since there was really nothing there of note! Obviously had we had Hermes with us we would have explored the nooks and crannies along the coast, but that was not to be…

From Sardinia it was back to Naples, and then a quick ride to the airport to take a flight to Tirana, Albania. This gets us out as the Schengen zone after 53 days, and allows us to have about another month back in the EU if we choose to take advantage of that. Since we have about 30 days in one location, it also allows us to catch our breath.

We are finding that breath catching to be more and more desirable, valuable, and appreciated with each passing month! I don’t know if it’s burn out, but there is no question, the continuing travel can take its toll.

And foreigners (and out of country license plates) are easy targets. Never a fun situation, but less so when this was is your only mode of transportation– and all of your future stays have already been booked in advance – based upon using the bike to get there.

We had to decide: do we take the ferry to Sardinia WITHOUT Hermes, and then another ferry to Naples? Or do we can the whole thing. We decided to carry on to Sardinia, and that is where we are now, and that will be shared shortly. But we DID need to cancel our Amalfi Coast leg and instead go to the destination where we’d be the longest, so we could catch our breaths; that will be Tirana, Albania, which we booked for a month. After that, we’re still working out details

Our stay was much more lively, more crowded than our first stay in 2019, but still tolerable. Since 2019 the very crowded island of Ortigia got very restrictive on parking, and residents needed permits and stickers, plus the island was NOT able to be accessed on Sunday afternoons and after certain hours of the day! One Sunday afternoon we had to park Hermes, our bike, on the Siracusa side, and walk home!

We did a few side trips, one to Catania, which impressed us more than we expected. It’s a crowded port city, so they normally have their “bad” areas, but we walked along the marina area, and enjoyed the crowds and food. Kat’s friend, Elaine, came to visit us for a week, so that was a novel experience, since we’d never done that before! It was cool showing someone around and introducing her to new things that we take for granted! She’d never been to Europe, so this was a great intro for her, and she and Kat got to reconnect.

A few observations about Sicily, and maybe Italy in general:

They have the most amazing red peppers, oranges, and lemons!! Fresh, fresh, fresh, and due to small refrigerators, it makes no sense to stock up.

They like to drive FAST! Their highways (they have several) top out at 130 kph, and they push that. That’s still only 80 mph (US), which is not really fast at all, but at 90-100 kph, they breezed by us.

This summer experience in Europe is proving to be eye opening for us. After 17 months in Asia, my “plan” was to compare the two areas to see where I felt the most comfortable and at home. I’m still trying to weigh the two, but, aside from the significantly higher prices in Europe, I still love the vibe and unique energy of Europe. Finally, we left Siracusa, went to Palermo, where we planned to stay for three days, then take the ferry to Sardinia for a week.

But, things happened, as the next blog will reveal.

He was only 310 CC, but for a single cylinder motorcycle he was full of spunk, which is how he got that name! I rode him down from Romania to Antalya, Turkey, where we were living at that time, and during that spring we used Max to check out some of the local places along the coast. Then in July we started an 88 day 4900 km trip North through all of Turkey and into Greece.

That one was almost the same time period, 87 days, but less miles (3600 km) and since we were not under a time constraint of being anywhere during any particular time, it was nice to go at our own pace. We named him Aragon (like the dragon) since he was solid, much more comfortable, and had a lot more storage capacity so we didn’t have to tie stuff on.

She was not enthused to go back through the same route that we had taken the year before, but when she came up with the the idea of taking the ferry over to Italy and going south into Sicily, well, then she got excited. Fortunately, we found a few coffee shops and a restaurant that we liked, and generally had good weather over our four days there, which was a treat after too many days on the bike with chilly temps and severe wind. Next stop along the way was a small B&B right next to the seashore, in a town called Schiavonea (don’t worry we never heard of it either!) Sadly, upon arriving we found no restaurants open for dinner, just pizza or gelato.

The next day we got to the Calabria region and pushed onward to the ferry at San Giovanni which took us over to Messina. That was a long ride, 180 miles, but since we were heading SOUTH and along the coast, we thought we’d be in warmer temps.

There were two mountain passes at high elevations that gave us pause, but, no rain. Until the third. The climb in elevation was barely noticeable until we watched the temperature gauge keep dropping and dropping. And then the tunnels came on like an army brigade! First one, then another, kept climbing, and then down the other side. All that was OK, until we found ourselves in a sudden downpour that I thought was heavy fog until Kat said, “pull over we need to get rain ponchos on,” which we did. A bit awkward trying to fit them over helmets and backpacks, but she rocked (again), and over the next few minutes we kept going lower and lower in elevation, the clouds parted, the fog cleared, and we found sunshine again! Let’s just say it was a memorable experience.

The ferry experience, however, was NOT one of our favorites due to a lot of traffic trying to fit along narrow serpentine streets, but since the ride through the Strait of Messina was just 20 minutes, it was a small price to pay.

So now we’re in the Sicilian town of Milazzo, in a really nice, larger than normal, AirBNB. We have TWO bedrooms and three balconies, and are situated on a peninsula with water along both sides of us. It took us just a few walks to learn our way around, but discovered a very sad fact of life in SOME Italian towns.

Everything (almost) closes at noon (or so) and doesn’t reopen until 7:00 or later. Restaurants, too. Since we like to eat earlier, that took some adjustments, but we have a nice kitchen, so Kat’s got back into the cooking groove. Which is fine with me. We’re eating healthier and cheaper, and except for cappuccino indulgences (all of $2), we found little to splurge on.

I did however take an island hop to Stromboli, about two hours away, and hiked up the mountain volcano. The volcano IS active, which gave us a little show with visuals as well as audio booms. That’s the new profile picture you see above. Let’s just say it was fun, exhausting, and coming down from 1400 feet elevation in the dark, with headlamps, was a bit daunting. Some might think I was crazy to take it on (including one current wife), but hey, I thought, we only live once!

It took just one day to realize that Italy is all about carbs. No matter here you go, you can find all the above; the problem is finding healthy, protein, and low-carb food!! Kat has been watching her carb intake for about three weeks now and is finding it very challenging to find good food! It’s hard to find even a good salad! But I’m not complaining… We definitely have a challenge finding the right ingredients, but it’s worth it.

To back up a week, I crossed over into Italy from Bulgaria 5 days ago, and it’s truly amazing how you can SEE the difference in the geography. Bulgaria was hilly, but not a lot of “mountains,” Meanwhile, within an hour of crossing the border (at a VERY high and cold elevation), I went through half a dozen tunnels. We met up in Thessaloniki, which is the Cultural Capital of Greece, and full of life! And pretty expensive too… Between the sticker shock from Asia and a weak US dollar which is about 12% lower than the euro, it’s been quite startling. 100 euros is worth just $88 and all that adds up, and is quite a bit different than Asia. We last left Italy on New Years Day as 2019 rolled into the notorious 2020, and quite a bit has changed.
