We left Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, after 4 weeks, and I have to say that the town impressed me more than I expected it to. I usually keep my anticipation at bay and hope for the best, and in this case our experiences have all been good. We did some touristy things, like hit the big towers (and we’ll have to come back for the BIGGIE, Merdeka118, when it opens in a few months), caught a few museums and attractions, had many great meals, and rented a motorbike to visit Batu Caves and Selangor district, by the sea. The people have truly been lovely, very Bali-like, and we rarely had a language barrier or any uneasy moments of, “OMG, what am I eating?”
We were prepared for hot weather and humidity, and we got it, but the numbers on the thermometer were more intimidating than the actually temps themselves. Thank God for AC, which gave us instant relief whenever we returned to our quite large and comfy room. We lacked a private kitchen, but had a community one just down the hall, so that worked. Our concerns about bugs and skeeters were unfounded, and even though I don’t like “big cities,” KL was very comfortable for me.
We are now in Ipoh via the train which was quite lovely! This was our first train travel in well over a year, and it was comfortable, quick, and pretty reasonable, and this is the first country we’ve been in a while where train travel is an optional way to get around. We can go all the way North into Thailand and quite a bit South for a small amount of money, so I would take that hands down over any bus !
This town is quite a bit smaller, which is good for me, and we’ll do some exploring for the next week. Our hotel is actually one of the older buildings in town, a historic one, and is a combination of deteriorating cement walls, postmodern architecture, and funky! But the bed is comfy, we have a room looking out to the main street, which is THE main Street in Old Town, and good air conditioning and shower. So far the rainfall has been more unpredictable since it can rain anytime during the day, whereas in KL we almost always got rain only at dinner time. It is definitely a small town, which is actually pretty comfortable, as opposed to the large metropolis of Kuala Lumpur. We are here for 10 days then going north into Penang and then onward to Vietnam
