We’ve been in Sicily for about 10 days, were planning on staying for 30, but decided to extend our stay since we’ve loved it so much. We have a room across from the ocean, so that’s a plus, and the food here is terrific. We are finally doing what we SAID we’d do on our travels: eating like a local. That means the farmer’s market every few days, where we can get everything including fish, fruit, nuts and veggies, and the prices are very good. A few days ago we got some fresh salmon, which was amazing, and some sea bass a few days later which they filleted for us, making it much easier to prepare. So far we’ve only gone on one long bike trip (to Taormina last week) and have enjoyed walking everywhere. I found a gym which is a 30 minutes’ walk, and on the way is a great grocery store which has everything we need. So far the weather has been terrific, but good luck making plans based on rain predictions! There can be zero percent chance of rain and yet, it rains just a few hours later. Maybe it’s the island volatility due to winds and coastlines, but planning in advance is iffy. But, as Kathleen says in her new book: Let go, Flow, and Choose to be Happy!
And for those who bought my new book, “Traveling the World Six Weeks at a Time, Volume I,” thank you so much! I have lots of inquiries out to get on travel and expat podcasts and am actually working on my next book, called “The Six Tenets of Nomadic Travel.”
We found out last week that Kathleen’s son is getting married in North Carolina in March, so that changed our travel plans and directions for 2020. Southeast Asia is off the table for now and will have to wait until next year. We decided to get “close” to the US about a month before, so are looking at staying in Mexico, Costa Rico or Panama during February through mid-March. Still working on details but we DO have the next two months worked out, which look like this:
– We’ll stay in Sicily about 10 extra days and then head to
– Tunisia, which is a 10-hour ferry ride and since it’s that close we’re going to cross Africa off our list. There’s a lot of history there so we’ll see what that looks like. Malta, still a possibility, but probably not this time.
– When we return from Tunisia we head to Istanbul, Turkey, for about 12 days. Many have raved about it and then we backtrack just a bit and head to
– Greece. We have to be mindful of our Schengen restrictions so can only stay a few weeks, but that time will be spent between Athens for a handful of days, and most of the time on the island of Santorini. From there we may visit other islands, too. It’ll be weird being there for Christmas AND New Year and this will be our first Thanksgiving outside the US and away from friends. Part of the price we pay for being Traveling Normads.
– From Greece we will go Middle Eastern and visit Cairo, Egypt for about 10 days and likewise in Israel, finally, which has been on my list for a long time. The plan from there is to fly from Tel Aviv to Los Angeles, stay for about a week, then head South of the Border for our six weeks.
That’s the latest update from Life on the Road, and if you have any question, just ask.
