After 15 days of traveling in my new life overseas, today I finally had my first WOW day, courtesy of the city of Sevilla (Seville), Spain.
It was an impulse decision, but since we were already in Madrid and there was no rush to get back to our home base in Valencia, we decided to use our Eurail pass and go somewhere else. That somewhere else is Sevilla, a little over two hours by train south of Madrid. A note about these high speed trains. They are amazingly comfortable. They have electrical, Wi-Fi, and food if you want it, and considering you’re going about 250 kph, time just whisks on by as does the scenery, which was beautiful.
When we got to Sevilla we did not have a room, so looked at our Airbnb selection along with some hotels. We ended up finding a nice Airbnb in a very active part of town and had a chance to walk around for a few hours this evening. The town was beyond lively, and the sense of history here was breathtaking.
Christopher Columbus left here just before he hit the road, or in this case, the ocean, to discover the US. When he returned he was the Golden boy and since he came from this town, for about a century a lot of money poured in. There was a period of massive construction for a hundred years and then the money went elsewhere and there wasn’t a whole lot built. We went by the Seville Castle and the Alcazar and at night they were beautiful.
In one sense we kind of wish that we had made this our home base instead of Valencia, but that is how we experience what works and what does not. As it is, we will stay for two days and probably make arrangements at some point to return for a few weeks or beyond. That is what this journey is all about, to find those places that we want to spend more time in and those that we wish to not.
As to my guidance for the baby boomer generation, make note. This is not a scary venture but there is a learning curve. Technology makes this amazingly effortless! for those of you who think that it’s beyond your skill-set, think again…
