Bali: is it past its’ prime, or still an Island Paradise?

Last November (2023) Kat and I started our one year Southeast Asia journey on Bali, Indonesia. And what a great place to start! The people were some of the most genuinely kind and charming we have ever met, and seeing the daily prayer offerings on the street reminded us of the spirituality of the mostly Hindu population. Ubud was our home for a month, and even though it was crowded, with insane traffic, we enjoyed it and found great walks, temples, and food!
But many complained that Bali “is not what it used to be,” and though that is probably true, what is what it used to be?
Nothing and no place, stays the same (usually), and sometimes change is for the better, and sometimes, growth and overpopulation (and over tourism), can make it worse—and skew how people view such things.
This International Living article shares my thoughts on two Nusa islands: Lembongan and Penida. We spent quite a bit of time on Lembongan last year, and will return in December. How do they compare, differ, and which one do I consider “better?”
