Some Interesting Things About Slovenia; hello Croatia (again)

Today was an interesting day as we were in three different countries (Slovenia, Italy, Croatia) over a handful of hours. This was the first time I remember doing this, and we were actually in and out of Slovenia twice! Our experience in Slovenia was pretty significant, so I put together a little overview and recap.
- Part I of our summer journey is done as we enter Croatia, which has been a favorite of ours for a long time. After a month on the road, I have slept in 9 different cities, Kat in five, and we have a long way to go. From northern Croatia, also known as the Istrian peninsula, we will work our way south via several different islands, which is something Croatia is known for.
- We have enjoyed our 15 days in Slovenia. Aside from the castles, caves, and lakes, the natural beauty of this country is impressive. I went to Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj and did some terrific hikes. The name “Lake Bled” was in my mind somewhere, and I had no idea where it was or why it was important, but it is a beautiful natural lake with an island in the middle with a church. It is truly breathtaking and the picture may strike a chord in you as well.
- It feels very much like Romania, with similar topography and geography, though a little bit more upscale.
- Even though we are one of the few American tourists, we do not feel as out of place as we have in other areas. Speaking English to most of the people seems to be comfortable, maybe as much as their native language.
- Everyone we met was adorable, courteous, and friendly. In some countries we ran into surly people at bars or grocery stores, but everyone we met here has been very cooperative and helpful, offering suggestions and guidance if we need it. We spoke with a local lady who owned a tennis club with an adjoining restaurant and coffee shop, and she told us about some hiking places. She said to us, “If you get lost, here’s my phone number and I will come and get you!” Adorable.
- Every home we see is well taken care of, with nice roofs, manicured lawns, flower beds and flower pots in the windows with incredible flowers. I don’t believe we passed a single field that was not cultivated and mowed.
- The country has some of the highest water quality in the world, which is such a joy. Not only that, but it is amazing for the skin, and my skin feels wonderfully soft!! Buying bottled water constantly is tedious and adds up over time, but the water here and in Croatia is imminently drinkable right out of the tap and is delicious!
- Not everything can be perfect (and I SOMETHING to complain about), but the pastries were disappointing to me…Most were quite dry and I could not find a decent burek, fruit pastry, or cinnamon bun. So that’s it: that’s my complaint!
